Abstract

The study sought to present, through a narrative review of the literature, a view about the complications resulting from intestinal ostomies. The main objective was to identify in the current literature which are the main complications of patients submitted to intestinal ostomies, both temporary and permanent. The narrative review of the literature was used as a research methodology, considering that the search for studies does not need to exhaust the sources of information, nor does it apply sophisticated and exhaustive search strategies, since the selection of studies and the interpretation of information may be subject to the subjectivity of the authors. The results presented the categories that best summarize the theme and concluded that in addition to the physical and physiological complications that patients undergoing intestinal ostomy undergo, the psychological impacts are also of great importance, and at this moment, in addition to health support, the nurse has a fundamental role in supporting patients who are going through such complex moments as the use of stomas.
